As part of the celebrations marking 85 years of Rádio Renascença, the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra performed in Lisbon for a truly unforgettable concert at the Altice Arena. The venue was sold out, with an enthusiastic audience enjoying impeccable acoustics on a historic evening attended by the Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.
Conducted by Tugan Sokhiev, the programme featured two pillars of the classical repertoire. The first half included Symphony No. 4 in F minor, Op. 36 by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, one of the most powerful works of Russian Romanticism. In the second half, the orchestra performed the symphonic suite Scheherazade, Op. 35 by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, inspired by One Thousand and One Nights.
The evening concluded with a vibrant encore — Unter Donner und Blitz, Op. 324 by Johann Strauss II — prompting a standing ovation from the entire arena. This concert proved to be a unique and unrepeatable experience, marking a historic milestone for one of Portugal’s most important media institutions.
Renowned worldwide as a symbol of Vienna, the “capital of music”, the Vienna Philharmonic brought together musicians of exceptional calibre, heirs to a musical tradition considered unparalleled in history. The event was co-produced by MOT – Memories of Tomorrow, Genius Y Meios, with technical direction by PTE – Produção Técnica de Eventos, and Rádio Renascença.
